Methods of Working with Parents

SUPPORTING PARENTS

Providing parents with social and emotional assistance which encourages and aids them to provide good services. Related concepts: building self-esteem and confidence, advocate, champion, encourage, stand behind, caring, and motivating.

HELPING PARENTS

Actively and concretely assisting the parent with tasks that will improve the parent’s level of functioning and move toward self-sufficient. Related concepts: lend a hand, aid, and assist.

TEACHING PARENTS

Providing the parent with knowledge and skills that will enhance their abilities to care for children who have been abused, neglected, and sexually victimized. Related concepts: educate, instruct, mentor, and model.

PARTICIPATING WITH PARENTS

Involving the parent with the agency case plan, meetings, activities, etc. Related concepts: engage, join in and accompany.
