October is Head Start Awareness Month

October 2014 seems like just yesterday, when programs across the country were engaging with their local media to celebrate 50 years of Head Start. While this October might not have the same big 50 year milestone, it’s still worth noting that, as one of the longest-running anti-poverty programs in US history, the history and purpose of Head Start is worth celebrating every year.

That’s why the National Head Start Association (NHSA) put together a unique landing page (HeadStartAwareness.org) to help programs celebrate in their local communities and provide a one-stop resource for easy sharing throughout October. Front and center, the website features an 18-minute NHSA-produced documentary, titled The Head Start Advantage, which “explores the lives of Head Start students, parents, teachers, and alumni working to envision and create a better world for all Americans. “

HeadStartAwareness.org also does several other things, including giving sample activities to use in your program, encouraging social media sharing of Head Start stories and photos with hashtag #HeadStartAwareness, and giving a general overview of the program and its history.

NHSA has also said that they’ll be releasing new resources every week via email to help your program celebrate Head Start Awareness Month, such as tips for working with the local media and engaging your Congressional representatives.
