No topic in early childhood education generates greater agreement than the need for positive parental engagement. Everyone wants it, but most need help in developing productive programs that involve family and community partners to boost a child success in Head Start.  Parent engagement is an ongoing process and how parents choose to become involved may vary from individual to individual. Traditional strategies to involve parents in Head Start, such as classroom volunteering or membership on the Policy Council, may not meet the interests, needs or logistical requirements of all parents. Because of the more complex nature of parenting today, parent engagement is too big a task for any one employee. It takes creativity, teamwork and the skills of the entire staff.   .

OBJECTIVES:

  • Provide resources tools to build strong solid parent partnership/engagement programs
  • Offer strategies to include the hard to reach parent
  • Discuss the provisions of the Head Start Act that relates to a parent required involvement
  • Strategies to be more involved and role of the entire staff in engaging parents
  • Ability to develop specialized goals that will help families support and guide their children’s learning
  • Provide proven strategies to build trusting and respectful relationships between the family, the community and the Head Start program.
